What is a Notary Public?

A Notary Public is a person chosen by the state to help prevent fraud. They watch people sign important
papers and make sure the signer is who they say they are, knows what the document is about, and is
signing it willingly.

What is a Notary Signing Agent?

A Notary Signing Agent is a notary who works with loan documents. They help people sign papers when
they are buying or refinancing a home. Their job is to check ID, make sure everything is signed and
dated, stamp (notarize) the documents, and send them back to the lender. Describe the item or answer the question so that site visitors who are interested get more information. You can emphasize this text with bullets, italics or bold, and add links.

What is an eNotary?

An eNotary is a Notary Public who does everything electronically—no paper involved. The signatures
and stamps are all digital.

What is Remote Notary?

Remote Notary means the notary and signer are not in the same place. Instead, they use video calls to
do the notarization, as allowed in most states.

What is Electronic Notarization (e-Notarization)?

This is when a notary adds a digital stamp and signature to a digital document, like a PDF. Once it's
notarized, the document is protected so no one can change it without being noticed. The notary also
keeps a digital record of the notarization

What is a Jurat?

A Jurat is when the signer promises that the information in the document is true. They do this by taking
an oath or affirmation in front of the notary.

What is an Acknowledgment?

An Acknowledgment is when the signer says they signed the document on purpose and know what it's
about. The notary checks their ID, and the signer either signs in front of the notary or brings a document
they already signed.

What is a True Copy?

A True Copy is when a notary makes a copy of a document and confirms it matches the original. In
Virginia, notaries can't do this for birth, death, or marriage certificates—only the Vital Records office can
do that.

What ID Can Be Used?

Signers must show a valid government-issued photo ID. Acceptable IDs include:
● State driver’s license
● U.S. passport
● State ID card
● Military ID
● Unexpired foreign passport
● Certificate of U.S. Citizenship
● Green card (with photo)
